Please Note: The dog in the accompanying photograph is the subject of the story, but the child or teenager pictured is probably not the patient in the story."Comfort is Seeing a Chocolate Lab like Grandpa's" Antibes is a big, cuddly, goofy chocolate lab who wears a uniform covered with beanie babies. He seems to know exactly what each child needs on his Wednesday visits to CHLA. On one particular day we went to the 4th floor to start our 2 hour visit. In the very first room was a patient who had just arrived. She was unsure of her new surroundings, as she had never been in a hospital before, and she was also a little scared. Her warm, loving family was all around her trying unsuccessfully to give her comfort, but when Antibes peeked in from behind the curtain and she saw him, she let out an excited, happy cry and said, "You look just like my grandpa's dog, and I love him, and miss him!" Antibes tail was wagging like crazy, and for both of them, it was love at first sight. He jumped right up on her bed, and they spent the next 15 minutes hugging and kissing! The girl's mother was making an album of her daughters stay at CHLA, so I took a photograph of the two of them, which was then put on the outside cover of her album. Each visit since then has been a wonderful, happy experience for this lovely child. The family looks forward to our coming every Wednesday, knowing Antibes visits give their daughter a sense of comfort and remind her of her grandpa's loving dog back home. Antibes loves every child he meets at CHLA, and he looks forward to posing for pictures with all of them. So look for him Wednesdays at noon. He's the one covered in little stuffed animals! |
