Please Note: The dog in the accompanying photograph is the subject of the story, but the child or teenager pictured is probably not the patient in the story.

Yikes, a friendly pit bull!!

The kids eagerly rush to the front of the line. “Me, me, me first!” when I ask them who wants to walk the dog? For you and me, it’s probably no big deal to do something as mundane as walking a dog up and down school corridors. But for these kids it brings so much pleasure and joy. Most of the kids at the Frances Blend School for the Blind are partially or completely visually impaired. Years ago I was taught: Don’t just give people fish. Give them a fishing pole so they can learn how to fish. Accomplishment inspires confidence and independence. So I give the kids the dog’s leash --- my version of the fishing pole. I want the kids to walk Indy all by themselves, without my assistance. Indy follows my voice instructions, and she gently leads the student holding the leash. The beauty of seeing Indy playing with the kids and seeing the confidence they get when they do something by themselves is unbelievably moving. It’s just them and the dog --- Indy the American Staffordshire PIT BULL terrier. Luvabull, huggabull, adorabull Indy!!! I was just thinking. Had Indy been a boy, he would have been called Brad ... Brad Pit.
